Castara Retreat is superbly located overlooking the bay of Castara on Tobago with stunning views of the Caribbean and mountains.

Choice of one penthouse apartment or two studio apartments in purpose-designed timber villa.

Backed by the deep green of the oldest protected rain forest in the Western Hemisphere, framed by mango trees and bamboo, it is the perfect place for "living in the landscape". The accommodation consists of three lodges that can be rented for holidays separately or combined for larger groups. The lodge apartments are purpose designed to create open, spacious living areas that allow uninhibited views, cool sea breezes and the natural sights and sounds that surround the property. The new timber structure is in classic Haiku style and is designed to "allow man and nature to live in mutual respect".

Castara Retreat / Sunset (Mouse Over)

		The beach is only a three minute walk down a winding footpath. It is ideal for swimming, body surfing, sunbathing, wandering along the sand to buy a drink, choosing freshly caught fish for dinner, or a friendly chat with the locals. The sea in the bay is safe for bathing, being free of the currents that can cause problems on the Atlantic coast. The village is a four minute walk down the road. Pick up home made bread at Veronica´s, order a take away, or collect provisions from the stores. The shops are simple, the people are delightful, and the mangoes are plentiful. Take a longer stroll to Little Bay (10 minutes) to snorkel over the world class coral reef that begins a few feet away from the shore; parrot fish, angel fish and sting rays are a few of the everyday sights on the reef among the fan and brain coral. Then have a drink or eat very good food at Brenton´s restaurant.

Rainforest Penthouse Apartment
Rainforest Penthouse Apartment takes up the whole of the top floor of the villa which blends beautifully into the lush green of the rainforest - the perfect place to enjoy "living in the landscape." It is set in more than an acre of tropical gardens with seating, a pagoda and viewing deck reached by well-lit, paved pathways.

Bedroom 1 (queen size bed) looks out over the deck to the ocean and beach beyond. Bedroom 2 can be arranged with twin beds or double bed and overlooks a grassy terrace and the valley beyond. The main living and dining areas occupy a spacious covered deck with a polished cypress floor and astounding unbounded views. There is a modern, well-equipped kitchen and a shower room.

Bed linen and house towels are changed twice weekly and full size frame mosquito nets are provided. The sandy beach is only four minutes walk as is the village with its little shops, cafes and fisherman's co-op.

Pelican Studio
Next to Osprey is Pelican studio apartment, which is similar in size, style and furnishing. It is located on the west side of the house and has wonderful views of the beach and the whole of Castara Bay. It looks west through the old mango trees to the ocean and the setting sun.

Pelican, like Osprey, is a studio apartment with a bedroom and kitchen area that is 18 feet x 12 feet. There are twin beds that can also be made into a massive king size bed with good quality mattresses, pillows and bed linen and a spacious mosquito net draped over a wooden frame that is suspended from the ceiling. The kitchen area is well equipped and there is a small full-height table and two upright chairs as well as a hair-drier, portable ventilation fan and a small security safe for cash and valuables.

The shower and toilet room is located to one side and is next to the wardrobe and storage area.

The covered terrace is 14 feet x 8 ft and is furnished with two comfortable chairs, a large hardwood coffee table and a hammock. Manta rays can regularly be seen in the ocean below and the birdlife is varied and constant particularly if you keep the bird feeders topped up. Bananaquits have even nested in the candle holders that we provide for each accommodation!

The covered terrace for Osprey and Pelican is divided by a partition which can be opened if a family or two couples are renting both.

Osprey Studio
Osprey studio apartment is located on the east side of the house and has wonderful views of the beach and the whole of Castara Bay as well as the rainforest ridge in the distance, where the sun rises.

The bedroom and kitchen encompass an area of 18 feet x 12 feet. It is simply but well equipped. There is a queen size double bed with a very large mosquito net suspended from a rectangular wooden frame. The kitchen area is well equipped and there is also a hair-drier, a portable ventilation fan and a small full-height table with two upright chairs. As with all the accommodation, there is a small security safe for keeping cash, documents and other valuable items.

The shower and toilet room is located at the doorway and is convenient for showering off sand and salt before entering the bedroom area.

In April 2005, the covered terrace was extended in order to create an even larger space for relaxing and dining and to provide additional shelter during rainstorms. The extended terrace is now 20ft by 7ft with fabulous views across the beach and bay and also onto the garden. The terrace has two comfortable chairs, a large hardwood coffee table and a hammock. Adjoining the covered terrace is a newly paved outside terrace. There is a barbeque in the corner of this terrace next to the grass path that meanders up and down and around the garden. There is a pair of sun loungers for use on the terrace or in the garden.
